The Pinehurst Village, with its historic inns, classic architecture, leisurely lifestyle and
numerous outdoor activities, is a center for much of the activity in the Pinehurst area.
The Village consists of the 598-acre tract of land that was purchased in 1895 by James Walker Tufts,
head of the America Soda Foundation. Tuft thought the moderate climate offered natural health benefits and wanted to create a winter resort
for New Englanders. In 1896 he hired Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Central Park in New York City, to create a first class resort with a
New England-type atmosphere. The Village, which today still has many of the original homes, took the form of a beautiful park with gracefully
curving streets and walks shaded by thousands of imported trees.
